Elizabeth “Liz” VanDermark, who was unanimously appointed to fill the Borough Council seat previously held by her late husband, Councilman Harold “Hal” VanDermark, is now seeking election in 2026 to serve a full three-year term on the Dunellen Borough Council.
Born in Englewood, New Jersey, and raised in Edison, New Jersey, VanDermark attended Catholic grammar school before graduating from Edison High School. She married Hal in 1978, and after spending several years in Virginia, the couple eventually made Dunellen their home more than 39 years ago. Together, they raised their two children, Joan and Hal, both of whom received their education in Dunellen’s public schools.
Throughout her career, VanDermark has worked in business management and retail, where she developed strong relationships through her dedication to customer service and helping others. Her professional background, combined with decades of community involvement, helped her transition seamlessly into public service.
Since joining the Council, VanDermark has served as Chair of the Police & Public Safety Committee, participating in the hiring process for police officers. She also serves on the Finance Committee, helping to ensure fiscal responsibility, and acts as liaison to the Office of Emergency Management, the Dunellen Rescue Squad, and the Fire Department Committee.
VanDermark credits her late husband’s strength, perseverance, and commitment to public service as lasting inspirations in her life. While continuing the legacy of service they built together, she has established her own voice on Council—focused on practical solutions, accountability, and community-centered leadership.
“Dunellen has been home to me for many years, and serving this community is deeply personal,” said VanDermark. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue that service, building on the foundation my husband helped create while working to address today’s challenges with care, collaboration, and common sense. The people of Dunellen can count on me, and I will always stay true to my word.”
